The Near and the Dear
How do you describe Neem Karoli Baba? It is said his very name was associated with miracles and mystery. He was often seen in more than one place at one time. He existed only to serve others. He helped alleviate the suffering of so very many people... and reportedly still does, though he left his body in 1973. He had the power to open people's hearts. He was kindness itself.

So begins the story of Dada Mukerjee, economics professor at respected Allahabad University and responsible family man, as he describes his struggle to come to terms with his faith when a wandering sadhu, a barefoot holy man dressed in a plaid blanket, walks into his life. Dada wrote, "His great power, the miracles and such, no doubt were there, but the very soft, delicate, sweet and innocent impressions left by him provided a perennial source of joy- the human aspect."

In The Near and The Dear, Dada tells his own story of time spent with Maharaj-ji, and relates stories about other sadhus and devotees who came to be with Neem Karoli Baba.  Mukerjee helps you discover commonalities with others despite cultural differences. Along with the stories of devotees who came to see Maharaj-ji, you read about how Maharaj-ji gave to each what he needed for his own spiritual journey. Mukerjee shows you the endlessly adaptable Guru working with his followers, not through coercion, intimidation, or fear, but with overwhelming compassion, understanding, and acceptance. You'll find yourself marveling at what you can accomplish when you follow your heart.

Prayer Flags
In Tibetan Tradition, flags containing sacred images and phrases are flown by the thousands, offering with each gust of wind, prayers for the peace and happiness of all beings. The Lama Foundation has expanded this tradition to embrace and celebrate the universality of religious and spiritual traditions from all over the world.

Hung outdoors, the prayers are offered to and released on the winds. Indoors, they create a sacred space of remembrance. The flags are also used to adorn altars, wrap sacred objects and have other uses.

The Maharaj-ji prayer flag is taken the modern spiritual classic, Be Here Now by Ram Dass. The inscription reads as follows:

"It's hard to speak in words about the the Guru…To speak of the difference between an Upa Guru and a Sat Guru.  It's interesting that when I tell the story of my journey in India and tell of the Guru.  I always speak of his miracles, although, from my point of view they are not the essence of the matter at all.  But: they are that which is speakable of...  It's a little like that Persian story where Nasruddin is looking for his house key under the street lamp and others come to help him and finally they ask him "Where did you loose it?" and he answers, "in my house, but it's dark in there and since it's light out here this is the best place to look."  I find myself talking about things that are talkable about, what can I say?"
