Why Love Serve Remember?
The name comes from the simplest instruction Ram Dass ever received from his guru, Neem Karoli Baba, known to devotees as Maharaj-ji: "Love everyone, serve everyone, and remember God." Ram Dass spent the rest of his life trying to live those few words, and found that they hold an entire spiritual path.
Love asks us to look past someone's body and personality to the being within, the same awareness that lives in each of us. Serve means meeting others where they are and helping relieve suffering in whatever form the moment calls for, whether that is sharing a meal or simply sitting beside someone and listening. Remember is the thread that ties it together: returning, again and again, to the divine in ourselves and in everyone we meet.
Ram Dass liked to tell of a long bus ride when he planned to bury himself in a holy book rather than talk to the stranger beside him, and heard Maharaj-ji gently remind him that he had been told to love, serve and remember, not to read books. So he put the book down and spent the trip in conversation. That is the spirit behind everything we make: everyday reminders to open the heart wherever you are.
