Ganesha, also known as Ganapati, is the son of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, and the brother of Karthikeyan. According to legend, Parvati created Ganesha from the earth in the form of a young boy. When Shiva's attendants mistakenly decapitated the boy, Parvati revealed to Shiva that he had struck down his own son. To make amends, Shiva took the head of the first animal he encountered an elephant and gave Ganesha the form by which he is most widely known today.
