“It is compassion that removes the heavy bar, opens the door to freedom, makes the naroow heart as wide as the world. Compassion takes away from the heart the inert weight, the paralyzing heaviness; it gives wings to those who cling to the lowlands of self.”
—Nyanaponika Thera

The beloved Buddhist meditation teacher and New York Times–bestselling author of Real Happiness offers encouragement and inspiration for anyone on the spiritual path.

Buddhist teachings have the power to transform our lives for the better, says Sharon Salzberg — and all we need to bring about this transformation can be found in the ordinary events of our everyday experiences.

In A Heart as Wide as the World, Salzberg distills more than twenty-five years of teaching and practicing meditation into a series of short essays, rich with anecdotes and personal revelations. Many chance moments, both small and profound, serve as the basis for her teachings: a market-stall hawker calling, “I have what you need!”; hotel guests’ reactions to a midnight fire alarm; her teacher, Dipa Ma, blessing a belligerent dog; the Dalai Lama laughing uproariously at his own mistake. Each passing moment, Salzberg shows, can help us along the path toward “a seamlessness of connection and an unbounded heart.”

Through meditation and the practice of lovingkindness, we discover our connection to those around us and to all life. This realization becomes a hidden storehouse of strength, allowing us to meet whatever the world offers with greater wisdom and compassion — and showing us that our heart can be truly as wide as the world.

Sharon Salzberg is a meditation pioneer, world-renowned teacher, and New York Times

Outside of her work at IMS, Sharon has emerged as a featured speaker and teacher worldwide
from working with 9/11 first responders and domestic violence shelter workers, to speaking
on panels alongside H.H. the Dalai Lama and addressing audiences at the State of the World
Forum. She aims to empower people with the tools to navigate life in an engaged and
connected way, offering non-sectarian retreats and study opportunities for all, especially those
